Counterfeit Goods Seized in Phoenix, Tuscon

AZCentral.com posted a story on December 14th about counterfeit merchandise.  According to the report, federal agents seized over $26 million in counterfeit clothing and other consumer goods. 

Federal law enforcement confiscated merchandise from three local swap markets in Phoenix and Tucson, along with cities in 26 other states.  The accused vendors were selling fake goods to holiday shoppers.

Phoenix Man Arrested in Connection with Armed Robberies

AZCentral.com reported on December 15th that police have arrested 32-year-old Justin Lee Martin on suspicion of armed robbery in Paradise Valley.

According to the story, Martin has a history of armed robbery in other areas.  In fact, Martin previously served a 10-year prison sentence for an armed robbery committed in 1995.  Martin was released from prison in 2007. 

The armed robbery offenses that have taken place since October have been eerily similar.  In each case, the robber entered the home between 7:30 and 10:30 pm and used a weapon to intimidate individuals inside the house.  There was only one robbery in which the intruder did not use a weapon.

Arizona DUI Task Force

AZCentral.com reported yesterday that over 20,000 traffic stops have been made since the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety created a DUI task force.  The task force was put in place to crack down on the number of impaired drivers on the streets and highways.  Of those 20,000 traffic stops, more than 1,200 people have been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).  Of those, nearly 250 face Extreme DUI charges (an enhanced DUI charge you can face if your BAC is over .15%).

Nearly 10,000 others of those stopped were issued citations for other offenses.

Glendale Man Pleads Not Guilty

ABC15.com reported a follow-up story today about 43-year-old Faleh Hassan Almaleki.  The Glendale resident pleaded not guilty to two charges of aggravated assault brought against him after he allegedly ran over his daughter and another woman in a parking lot in Peoria. 

Authorities say that the charges will probably be increased due to the fact that Almaleki's daughter, 20-year-old Noor Almaleki, later died from her injuries.

Phoenix Jury Finds Teen Guilty of Murder

ABC15.com reported today that 16-year-old Benjamin Bruce Cannon has been found guilty of murdering 28-year-old Bradley Gerrard during a carjacking.  Another teen, Felix Vasquez, is also awaiting sentencing for the crime.  Both boys have also been charged with arson, vehicle theft and armed robbery.

Scottsdale Man Arrested After Alleged Robbery Attempt

AZCentral.com reported today that 26-year-old Jerome Whatton was taken into custody on Friday in connection with an attempted theft at an Albertson's pharmacy.

According to authorities, the robbery occurred when the suspect went into the pharmacy on Thursday with a note demanding that the pharmacist give him all of the store's supply of OxyContin (a strong painkiller that is reportedly often abused).  When the store's pharmacist told him that she wasn't able to access the OxyContin, Whatton left the store.

He was later picked up by police and charged with armed robbery.

Phoenix Teen Surrenders to Police

AZCentral.com posted a story today about a local teen who police had been searching for in connection with a shooting.  The teen, 17-year-old Adrian Vasquez, turned himself in to authorities on Saturday.

Vasquez has been charged with manslaughter for the murder of 19-year-old Antonio Lugo.

ASU Student Arrested in Robbery

AZCentral.com recently reported on a story involving a robbery/assault that occured at a Mesa clothing store last Thursday.

According to the article, 21-year-old Karla Janeth Jauregui was arrested at ASU after being identified in the store's security camera videos.  Jauregui assaulted a clerk at the store with a crowbar in addition to robbing the establishment.  Mesa police stated that Jauregui admitted that she had committed the assault.

Chandler Woman Could Face Charges in Fatal Accident

Eastvalleytribune.com reported that Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials is seeking charges against a 69-year-old woman who allegedly left the scene of an accident that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old boy.

According to a search warrant, Sharon Ann Irvine called the DPS to report damage to her car on the same day that the 6-year-old Ahmend Abdirahman was killed at the scene of an accident.  Irvine swerved to miss the minivan that Abdirahman's mother was driving, which later collided with another minivan.  Neither Abdirahman nor his three siblings were wearing seatbelts.
