Salvador Vivas-Diaz, 50, was sentenced to the maximum of 16 years for manslaughter for the fatal car accident that killed Phoenix Police Officer Shane Figueroa, reports AZcentral. Vivas-Diaz was tested for blood alcohol concentration and was found to be at .24%, three times the legal limit of .08%.
Vivas-Diaz had been arrested twice before on DUI charges but had never been convicted. He was deported to Mexico and had returned to live illegally in the U.S. He was driving drunk and crossed the middle line and smashed into the police cruiser that was on a "shots fired" call. Vivas-Diaz urinated by the side of the road before going to assist the injured officer who had been thrown from the police car.
